  INTRODUCTION Jetscreen controller unit

Jaymor Industries Ltd manufacture heavy duty industrial metal detectors to suit the individual customer's needs. The Jetscreen Metal Detector range will positively identify tramp metal before any damage is done further down the line.

The detector will indicate the presence of tramp metal by either stopping the conveyer, sounding an alarm, rejecting a portion of the product, or reversing the belt. Any combination of these functions may be used in an installation to meet the customer's requirements.

The detectors are commonly used in conjunction with a conveyor belt, which transports material to machines for processing. Detection of foreign metal will prevent both contamination of the product and damage to the processing machinery.

  THEORY OF OPERATION

The Jetscreen Metal Detector employs radio frequency to detect tramp metal of any type. A magnetic field is generated within the sensing head area, which will alter in the presence of a moving conductive material. The control unit monitors the magnetic field and will operate an alarm circuit when a fluctuation is detected. The detector head is built in such a fashion as to concentrate the direction of the detection field and ignore any metal that is not in the area of interest, such as structural bracing etc.

The Jaymor Jetscreen Metal Detector is designed as an inherently stable unit in order to prevent spurious alarms due to voltage fluctuations or electrical noise, while still retaining a high degree of sensitivity. An adjustable rotary knob inside the control cabinet is used to set the sensitivity at which the detector will trigger.

The controller electronics are housed in a robust powder-coated steel or stainless steel enclosure, with a double-lip lid seal for use in rugged industrial conditions. The control unit can be fitted with an optional timing module for auto-reset, dump, reverse or reject functions. The unit also houses an external manual reset button and trip indicator light. A remote reset option can also be accommodated in the controller unit.

Detector heads come with a 5 m screened lead to connect to the controller box as standard. This lead can be lengthened to 10m upon request.

Jetscreen controller electronics

Standard detector heads are constructed from welded aluminium and then given a powder-coated finish. Welded stainless steel units are available for particularly harsh environments, or where specified such as in the food industry.

The sensitivity of the Jaymor Jetscreen Metal Detectors varies slightly with each model type. For all models the sensitivity is relative to the distance from the head to the tramp metal. Sensitivity will lower the further away the piece of metal to be detected is from the detection face. For this reason the enclosed head designs will have a greater sensitivity than the flat style heads as they will detect from all sides around an object, reducing the distance from the sensing face to the metal.

The table below shows typical maximum detection distances from the sensing face of a 750mm wide flat detector head, with the conveyor belt traveling over the head at 33m/min. The flat detector head is the least sensitive model in the Jetscreen range, so contoured and enclosed heads will yield better results.

Sensitivity Setting 10 (max) 7 5
8mm steel nut 80mm 50mm 25mm
75mm steel nail 100mm 75mm 50mm
100mm steel nail 115mm 85mm 60mm
250mm crescent 230mm 180mm 160mm

ENCLOSED DETECTOR HEAD Enclosed detector head

The enclosed detector head is ideal for applications where the material on the conveyor belt is likely to sit a reasonable height from the base of the belt. The conveyor will be fed through the centre of the head so that the product is examined from all four sides of the head.

The dimensions of the opening in the head will be constructed to suit the specific conveyor size and the likely height of product on the belt. As sensitivity reduces with distance from the sensing head, Jaymor technicians will work with the customer to ensure that an optimal head size is designed to meet the requirements of the application.

The location of the mounting brackets and junction box on the head can be placed in any position to suit the individual mounting requirements of the end user. The brackets are typically constructed of 50mm x 50mm aluminium angle and can extend past the outer dimensions of the head if needed. It is recommended that the brackets on the head are used for mounting as attaching any other metal to the head may compromise its performance.

FLAT DETECTOR HEAD Flat detector head

The flat detector head is designed to sit just beneath the conveyor belt and can be made to match the width of the belt in order to ensure reliable operation. The flat head is a popular option as they are simple to install and, although less sensitive than the other styles of heads, prove more than adequate for many applications.

As the head sits beneath the conveyor belt, it is not necessary to cut the belt when installing, and provided the head is located sufficiently clear of any other metal work can perform very well.

The position of the mounting brackets and junction box can be designed to suit the individual needs of the client.

CONTOURED DETECTOR HEAD Contoured detector head

The contoured detector head is a less common detector head, which will provide better performance than the flat detector, although not as good as an enclosed head. The contoured option is popular for applications where maximum sensitivity is required, but it is not possible to cut the belt to install an enclosed head. Other applications include contoured conveyors, where the product would sit a long way from sensing face of a standard flat detector head.

The head is designed to sit beneath the conveyor belt, as with the flat head, but has a profile specifically designed to match that of the conveyor. As with all Jaymor detector heads, the mounting brackets and lead junction box can be located at any position to suit the customer's requirements.

DROP-THROUGH DETECTOR HEAD Drop-through detector head

The drop through detector head is an adaptation of the standard enclosed style detector. It has been designed for those applications where the product falls through the detector and on to a conveyor below.

This head offers good performance as the magnetic field is well contained inside the head and as such is accurately monitored by the control electronics. The dimension of the detector is made to match that of the existing pipe (or similar) that the product will pass through, and as the product is seldom very far from the detecting face provides reliable detection in many difficult situations.

Jaymor is also able to offer an automatic ejection chute to discard the contaminated product without the need to stop the flow of product or other processes further downstream.

CUSTOM HEAD DESIGN Custom enclosed detector head

Jaymor Industries is also able to produce the Jetscreen metal detector heads in custom configurations to suit more unusual applications.

This process will often involve thorough collaboration between Jaymor technicians and the customer to ensure that the desired results are achievable.
